Dr Phoebe Hong

MBCHB, PGDIPOBSTMEDGYN, FRANZCOG, MMININVS
SPECIALIST OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNAECOLOGIST

Dr Phoebe Hong is a very experienced Gynaecologist with a private practice in Cairns.

After completing her medical degree at the University of Auckland in 2006, Dr Hong commenced her specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She trained at the National Women’s Hospital, Taranaki Base Hospital, and North Shore Hospital (all located in New Zealand).  In 2013, she moved to Australia and worked at Cairns Hospital as a Senior Obstetrics & Gynaecology Trainee and the Far North Regional Obstetric and Gynaecological Service (FROGS) Registrar. This invaluable experience enabled her to develop specialty knowledge of the healthcare needs of the people of Far North Queensland.

While working in Cairns, Dr Hong fell in love with the beauty and tropical weather of this stunning region, and decided to make it her permanent home.

Wishing to provide more women in Cairns and Far North Queensland with access to advanced laparoscopy (minimally invasive keyhole surgery), she completed a 2-year fellowship in Advanced Hysteroscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeries.

During this time, Dr Hong was a facilitator at several GP courses and the Basic Surgical Skill course for Junior Obstetric and Gynaecology Trainees. She was also awarded a Covidien Scholarship and completed a Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Adelaide. Today, her practice provides specialist care in obstetrics and gynaecology, and delivers babies at Cairns Private Hospital.

Special interest in laparoscopic procedures

Dr Hong is passionate about laparoscopic procedures, also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery. She believes this approach is the current best practice and future of surgery.

She has extensive training in laparoscopic procedures, including hysterectomy, endometriosis, fibroid removal (myomectomy) and cerclage. While training, she was mentored by a number of advanced gynaecology laparoscopic surgeons, including Dr Alex Ades, who is internationally recognised for his experience in laparoscopic cerclage.

Laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique which uses very small incisions, or cuts, which can be as small as 0.5cm. The surgery is performed through these incisions using tiny instruments and a miniature camera called a laparoscope.

Laparoscopic surgery results in less surgical trauma than major abdominal surgery, and it allows for a quicker recovery – two key considerations for busy women of all ages.

Outside of medicine, Dr Hong has a keen interest in cooking, baking, travelling, and foreign languages. She speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as basic Japanese.

Personalised, Compassionate Care

Dr Hong offers a highly personalised care approach that focuses on your individual wishes and goals. She believes there is no one-size-fits-all approach to medicine and surgery, as we are all different, and we all have unique needs and priorities.
