What are ovarian cysts?
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on one or both of your ovaries. They are often painless and don’t cause symptoms.
Symptoms that might occur can include pelvic pain, bloating, painful intercourse, and painful bowel movements.
Our treatment options for ovarian cysts
If you have an ovarian cyst, you can discuss your options at your appointment with Dr Hong and work out the most suitable treatment plan.
Many ovarian cysts disappear naturally and don’t require treatment. You may need monitoring with blood tests and repeat ultrasounds 6 to 8 weeks after your diagnosis to check whether the cyst has resolved or is growing.
If you do need treatment for your ovarian cyst, some of the most common options can include:
- Ovarian cystectomy – removal of the ovarian cyst alone with preservation of the ovary
- Oophorectomy – removal of the ovary
Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) treatment is often possible but a more involved operation with a bigger incision (laparotomy) may be indicated. Dr Hong is able to provide both options.
