Fibroids
What are fibroids?
Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths that form in and around your uterus. They may form alone, or in groups. Fibroids can be various sizes and form in different locations.
Depending on their specific size and location, fibroids can cause pelvic pain, heavy periods, infertility, and difficulty passing urine or bowel movements. Not all fibroids need treatment.
Our treatment options for fibroids
If you have fibroids, your treatment will depend on the symptoms, size, and location of your fibroids. Some common treatments can include:
- Hysteroscopic resection – a procedure for removing fibroids that occur inside of the uterus, using a medical device called an hysteroscope
- Myomectomy – surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus which can be either laparoscopic or open (this procedure helps to preserve fertility as it allows the uterus to stay in place)
- Hysterectomy – a more involved operation to remove the uterus
Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) treatments are possible, depending on the size and position of your fibroids.
